Is Coaching for Me?

Coaching helps people achieve a desired goal or goals. An individual may seek coaching as a way to get motivated to start a new career or business. Together with the therapist, a plan of action is designed so the person can take the steps to fulfill his or her dream.

Many times, clients experience resistances or blockages to achieving their goal. On one hand, they have self-destructive behaviors and/or negative thinking that prevents achieving the goal. On the other hand, they have the dream asking for the opportunity to become a reality. They find themselves in the middle and do not have the tools or understanding to move forward.

My job is to help the individual move through these blocks by understanding what is going on with him or her. I obtain information from the client about his or her family to create a "genogram."

The genogram is like a map where the client can see on paper where might he or she have learned behaviors like procrastination, self-doubt, and negative thinking. It is not unusual to find out stories of self-sabotage because the individual was behaving under the parental induction of "you are a failure," or "women don't own businesses," and so on.

If the inductions are not brought to awareness, the individual will continue to self-sabotage. This process does not have the depth of psychotherapy since its purpose is to help the client move through the blocks to success and not for the alleviation of mental suffering. The purpose of coaching to is to help you focus in the present for your future goal, by providing tools for goal setting, motivation, and support.
